When we all thought Duke Nukem Forever video game was never going to be released , Bulletstorm, was probably the closest video game we would have to a Duke Nukem game....
After playing a good amount of the demo on Xbox 360 what makes this game stand out from the rest of the first person shooters is the new take on the time trail mode, called echo, and the over the top action. With recent big hit video game titles that concentrate on the more serious tones of a game. Bulletstorm focuses on being funny and being fast paced action at the same time.
In the demo you play a small section level called, "falling building", where the setting is in a post‐apocalyptic city where buildings are blown half to pieces, wildlife growing over buildings, and debris is everywhere as far as the eye can see. In this demo you are to race through the level and rack up as many points as you can in less than five minutes by killing your enemies in very creative ways. There is no penalty for going over five minutes to finish the level, but you do get docked points for going over the time you suppose to finish. Think of it as trying to make a par in golf; but with guns and carnage. The main mechanic of the game is using your weapons to rack up points for every creative kill you pull off.
In the demo you are given four weapons to play with. You have your main assault rifle (Peacemaker), grenade launcher (Flail Gun), pistol (The Screamer), and your whip. Each weapon has a secondary attack that can be used in some situations to produce massive skill points. The Peacemaker is your normal assault rifle, but the secondary fire on it incarnates victims straight to their bones. The Flail Gun is your grenade launcher, but the grenades are chained together and can be used to wrap up enemies on the ground or in the air. When the grenades are latched on to the enemy you are shown to have a trigger button to initiate the explosion in your hand, and you could wait till the very last minute as they stagger crying for their life as you make them explode. The secondary fire to this weapon penetrates whoever is in front by slicing through their bodies and then exploding afterwards. The Screamer, pistol, is often used for headshots or your last resort in some cases, but its secondary is very useful. It launches a flare like shot to any enemy you point at and sends them flying in any direction with a satisfying explosion in the end leaving you space to run and more kill points for you. Probably the most useful out of the weapons is your whip you have equipped. Your whip can extend from short to long distances by grabbing nearby or long distance enemies to you for your chance to get creative with their floating bodies. Whenever you grab your enemy with your whip to you they will float in midair completely defenseless, slow motion, and at the same time you take your aim and decided how you want to kill the poor sap. The secondary fire on the whip, called the thumper, is slamming the whip on the ground with whoever you have grabbed and sending anybody in the area high in the air in slow motion leaving you a great opportunity to gain more kill points. The controls feel pretty well balanced for this over the top action shooter as well as a very customizable layout to play with.
The game's button layout is pretty simple and you can also customize the controls to your liking. The run feature in this game is quite useful in combat, and also a great way to get from one place to another. By pressing ,”A” twice on the xbox 360 controller you go into a slide and be able to go across the map faster then your normal run speed. You have the ability to use your slide into an enemy to add on to your attack. For example, you can slide into an enemy, kick him up in the air, shoot him in the nuts, and let him get pinned up against the wall for a Voodoo skill kill. The main draw of this game is racking up points on each kill to increase your chances of getting the top score either among friends or the world. Each skill kill haves a different name for the type of kill you inflict to each enemy such as:
Headshot - Self explanatory.
Bullet Kick - Kick an enemy then kill them.
Bullet Slide - Kill an enemy after they have been juggled by a slide.
Gag Reflex - Kill an enemy with a shot to the throat.
Grenade Gag - Attach a flail gun shot to an enemy's head, then kill him.
Flyswatter - Splatter an enemy against a ceiling with the Thumper.
Mercy - Kill an enemy with a shot to the head or a kick, after shooting them in the groin.
Meat Slicer - Kill an enemy by firing a flail gun onto cover next to them, and having the wire swing by and dismember them.
Gang Bang - Kill multiple enemies at once with flail gun shot.
Overkill - Kill an enemy with a headshot using the PMC's alternate fire.
There was little information in the demo about what the story is, but from the looks of this game I don't think the story will be all that important, and more about having dumb fun. Overall, from playing this demo I can get a feel for what this game is going for. Over the top action, one liners that would make Duke Nukem proud, carnage, gore, combo system, and an addictive play style that would make gamers come back for more. Bulletstorm is due to come out February, 22nd of this year on Xbox 360, PC, and Playstation 3.
