Sony recently just held an exclusive press conference where they officially announced the brand new PS4. And while the system itself was not shown other interesting material was presented at the event. The new controller with the touch pads and improved motion detection was shown off which shows that it is much more than just an artless update. And of course what would any new game system be without an assorted lineup of brand new games which are the essential lifeforce to every system. Although despite some very impressive announcements there was some info about the new system that was very unpleasant to hear and ranges from disturbing to just plain frustrating.
The first piece of unpleasant information was that the new system will not be backwards compatible in any form with its predecessors. It was somewhat bad enough that the PS3 was no longer being backwards compatible with the PS2 but now with the new PS4 you will not be able to play discs from any of its previous forerunners at all. That means for those of you out there who have nice stacks of physical game discs from any of the previous generations of Playstation will have to keep its ancestors hooked up in your game space if you want to play them. If your one of those gamer like me who spends just as much time playing both older and newer games then you may find yourself somewhat very irritated by this.
Another similar but yet minor annoyance is the fact that you will not be able to use previous Playstation controllers on the new system. The PS2 had the ability to use controllers from its predecessor and even the PS3 with some needed help from third party devices gave you the option to also use controllers from its previous iterations. For all of you out there who have any extra Playstation controllers saved over the years consider them totally worthless. The only reason I consider this to be somewhat minor is because hopefully the third parties will properly find some way around this problem.
Because of the lack of any backwards compatibility Sony is going to release games from previous generation using cloud based streaming through the company Gaikai. Which does seems nice at first but still offers some serious problems. You need to have an unbroken internet connection to use which mean anytime you want to play an older game you will need an internet connection. Also if the game you want to play is not yet available for streaming then of course you will not be able to ever play it and if it is some really obscure game you can bet that game you never be streamed.
The biggest slap to the face is that the new system will not have any access to previously released Playstation Network games. Do I even need to talk about what is wrong with this because it pretty much speaks all by itself? If this is not the biggest fuck you Sony have ever given then I personally do not know what is? All those digital games you downloaded through the Playstation Network are now completely worthless talk about throwing your money away.
So those are my personal pet peeves with the PS4. And I can for sure say that some of them are worth the peeving. And some of them are not as bad as not being able to play used games or having to have an endless internet connection. But these are problems that can really hurt the PS4 including loyal Playstaion gamers who have been playing with the Playstation brand since it began. And I really hope that Sony will get the message.
